Urban Lake Living
Healthy Communities, Healthy Lakes
The Federation of Alberta Naturalists is pleased to announce Urban Lake Living – Healthy Communities, Healthy Lakes. This exciting new tool for residents provides the answers to your questions about how to keep our urban lakes healthy.
Basis for the Program
Runoff from hard surfaces like roofs and driveways picks up pollutants and carries them downhill into urban lakes. This causes erosion, algae growth and unpleasant odours, not to mention poor water quality, all of which lead to a decreased standard of living.
The stormwater lakes that accept the runoff have now become settling ponds and function to help clean the water before it reaches the North Saskatchewan River.
Aims of the Program
One of Urban Lake Living – Healthy Communities, Healthy Lakes' goals is to spread awareness about the cumulative effects of our personal actions on water quality in a community watershed.
Water quality and pollution are growing concerns for many. This program aims to prevent pollution at the source - our homes and our activities around the yard.
Your participation can help to minimize pollutants in your urban watershed. Through individual and community cumulative actions, we can work together to help improve water quality.
Homesite Consultations
Free Homesite Consultations emphasize individual responsibility for improvement and show how simple changes to how we live on our properties can help improve the health of our urban lake.
A Homesite Consultant will walk you through your property while sharing the basics of how to reduce stormwater pollution.
A follow-up report is also provided and includes recommendations based upon the priorities, interests, and resources of the homeowner. The implementation of these recommendations is completely voluntary, and all information collected is kept private.
